Learning Objectives
-
- Draw Lewis structures for various covalently bonded molecules and polyatomic ions
- Predict, name and sketch molecule shapes using VSEPR Theory
- Predict resonance using Lewis structures
- Use model kits to construct these molecules and polyatomic ions in order to explore their structure and shapes
Background
These slides review the steps for drawing a Lewis structure for a covalent molecule or polyatomic ion. From the Lewis structure, the bonds and lone pairs on the central atom are used to determine the three-dimensional molecule shape (VSEPR Theory): Molecule Shapes Lab Download Molecule Shapes Lab
