COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to develop proper attitudes toward healthful living. Topics include development tasks of young adults; mental health and stress; cause and prevention of disease; effects of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; sexuality and fertility management; aging; and environmental and health management issues.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Access, review and analyze authentic medical resources for information on diseases and health topics
  2. Analyze common symptoms of diseases and ill-health conditions, within families of diseases, and recognize threats of life and comprises to health
  3. Examine their own state of wellness through health assessments and journaling
  4. Analyze and plan their physical fitness needs
  5. Converse with others regarding health issues
  6. Have the knowledge of their personal family history of disease
  7. Achieve greater home emergency preparedness and personal safety knowledge

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Students will know and assess their personal blood pressure reading and the impact of this physiological measure on their short term and long term health
  2. Students will understand risk factors for ill health, illness, and unhealthy conditions
  3. Students will understand the personal behaviors, habits and choices relating to development and maintenance of health through self-management of nutrition, diet, physical movement, exercise, stress management, sleep, rest, and recreation

    This class has been structured to accommodate experienced online class participants, as well as novices. You will need to be familiar with the basic functions of a computer, word processing, presentation software, and Internet access, however.

It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with these codes. Please be extremely careful that you do not engage in any behavior that could even be construed as cheating. Outside of class, students are allowed to study together. However, copying another student's homework is not acceptable.   If the instructor determines that students have “relied” too heavily on each other in preparing homework or any other project, the students may be assigned no credit. Future occurrences could result in academic disciplinary action. During an exam, talking to another student, looking at another student's paper, using a calculator w/business functions, using cheat notes, etc. are not permitted.

2) Discussions - 15 points each

            4 Total for the course

3) Worksheets - 10 points each

            2 Total Worksheets

4) Quizzes – 25 points each

            1 per Module – 4 total for the course

5) Nutrition Analysis - 75 points

6) SMART and FITT Assignment - 50 points

7) Final Project - 90 points - Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, & Respiratory Disease

 

Total Points = 420

 

A = 90 -100%
B = 80 - 89%
C = 70 - 79%
D = 60 - 69%
F = below 60%
